Good morning!
Looks like it is going to be another really hot high humidity day here. Well, it seems that yesterday, with just a few days left before the start of the new school year here (was supposed to this Friday be Aug. 14), Governor Wolf has decided (after flip flopping on the subject several times these last few weeks) that nearly all of the state's school districts will not be allowed to reopen for any in person classes after all. So the plans that the local schools have been working on since late March are all out the window now, and they have only 2 weeks (until Aug 24) to get things set up for totally online classes this year. Also most daycare services are being shut down again because 1 child in 1 daycare in the state was a "probable" asymptomatic Covid-19 positive last week. I don't know what he expects single parent families or families where both parents have to work to make ends meet with young kids to do. Not to mention the problems this online schooling makes for families that don't have access to reliable internet service at home.
On a lighter note, I had what may be my favorite scam call yet from someone with a heavy accent claiming to be Joe Biden. It seems that for a "generous donation" to his campaign, I can be the first to find out who Joe is picking as his VP running mate.

And in another case of "This probably shouldn't be funny but the irony made made me smile": Apt Bible passage at Catholic Mass coincides with earthquakeCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Scripture quite literally came to life for several Catholic churches in North Carolina as a rare earthquake rattled portions of the state over the weekend. According to a news release from the Diocese of Charlotte, Father Richard Sutter of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church said the lector in the Sunday service had just reached the 19th chapter of 1 Kings, a Bible passage referring to the prophet Elijah, which said, “After the wind there was an earthquake — but the LORD was not in the earthquake.” It was then that parishioners felt the 5.1 magnitude earthquake centered near Sparta, the most powerful to hit the state in more than 100 years. The Charlotte Observer reported that while he didn’t feel it himself, Sutter said parishioners came up to him as soon as the service ended. He said the moment can be a lesson for the times. “When there’s fear from an earthquake, when there’s fear from a storm, when there’s fear from a pandemic and uncertainty ... you have to let the Lord speak to us the truth,” he said. "Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus Christ and not the waves (or even earthquakes) we cannot control,” he said. Father Cory Catron, pastor of the Catholic mission in Sparta, said his church suffered no apparent damage from the quake. “Made for good homily material, though,” the news release said. www.yahoo.com/news/apt-bible-passage-catholic-mass-230129285.html

I really feel for the school systems across the country that are being jerked around by their state government. Most of all, the amount of suffering this will cause working parents and the students themselves. Kids need to be kids. They need to be learning in groups and outside playing with other kids their ages. There's a 3-tiered thing going on with the schools here - 1. all in-person; 2. all virtual; and three-mixed between in-person for some things and virtual for most classes. I think the grands should take the first option, but I don't have a vote. I haven't heard what they're going to do.

Definitely need to capitalize on the events of the times.
Father Sutter's teaching point, "Let's keep our eyes on Jesus Christ" is really the key.
We had a torrential downpour-type storm with brilliant flashes of lightning in the middle of the night. I could see lightning up high in the clouds, way off to the NW before midnight. The weatherman said at 10 p.m. he expected all of the rain activity to fade away before it reached us, but there was at least one last blast left in it between 3 & 4 this morning. As hard as it rained, there weren't many puddles after daybreak.
The big interesting thing here is that the city council will consider repealing the mask ordinance during the regular council meeting at 6 p.m. this evening. Someone has made sense to the mayor and his right hand man, apparently. For one thing, they were trying to require people who weren't masking to produce a doctor's note explaining what condition they have that makes masking inadvisable. That's a direct violation of HIPAA. They've also apparently gotten the message that the mandate is affecting business, because they've decided they're going to run a "Keep Lawton Open" campaign, and encourage people to shop locally (and making masks optional). We'll see how the council meeting goes, but I can already hear the sound of taped signs re: masks are mandatory being ripped off of shop windows & doors.

At risk of coming across as snarky, I wonder if down the road we will be seeing a lot of lawsuits from people who developed long term breathing problems or other health issues from wearing all of these mandated masks.
I also wonder if the reason Biden hasn't announced his running mate yet is because he is waiting for his (Russian?) puppet masters to tell him who to pick.
Of course, if Joe really wants a "woman of color" for his VP like he says he does, he could always ask Native American Elizabeth Warren.
(Yeah, I'm being bad today )

(Yeah, I'm being bad today ) Mel, you are su-uch a bad boy today! Are you like that cat & need more coffee? Can't you just hear the TV commercials?
"If you or a loved one were FORCED to wear a cloth, or similar, face covering between March 17th and November 3rd, 2020 - and you developed long term breathing problems, skin irritations that would not heal, or other health issues - call the office of Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe immediately at 800-000-0000. Attorneys are standing by!" I don't think Biden's handlers are Russian. I think they're Chinese. I'm pretty sure Russia is going to be allied with us at the appropriate moment against China. Attachment Deleted It's okay if you disagree, just mark the date I said it and wait 'n see if I'm right.

I'm watching the city council meeting. Trying not to throw something at the TV when the mayor speaks. It's the kneejerk reactions and the wishy-washiness of his presentations.

The city council They favored the "keep the mask ordinance" people. Some of the anti-mask ordinance people really didn't behave professionally; i.e., they weren't "nice", which hurt the anti-mask side because the council members feelings were all hurt from being called Nazis, anti-Christian, anti-American, and worse. One councilman, who has been against mandated masking from the start, expressed his views that this is a free country and, because it is, people should have the choice: wear a mask if you want to; don't wear a mask if you don't want to. None of the rest of the council members agreed with him. Ultimately, they tabled the topic until the first regular meeting in October.
