Last night two cop cars screeched into the neighborhood on account of illegal fireworks. It's not unusual, near July 4, to hear some fire crackers but these were big rockets. I'll bet the neighborhood dogs were going nuts. Poor dogs! This neighborhood used to be really bad about people setting off fireworks, and then 3 or 4 years ago, the city outlawed fireworks everywhere except for the big display that professionals set off. That display has been cancelled this year, due to the virus. I can't remember if you or Mel posted this meme, Scott, but I got a big kick out of it so kept a copy. You can bet our dogs will be calmer the 3rd to the 6th, when just about everything around here will be taking a quiet holiday.

The barber shops are still closed here, so Dad wants me to come over and cut his hair for him this morning.
I've been cutting my own hair for the last several years, ever since I realized that you can buy a pretty good barber set for not much more than the cost of one professional haircut; but I'm always nervous about doing someone else's hair.
Not too much chance of messing up in this case though, because he just wants a simple "buzz cut" for Summer. I hope the haircutting goes well, Mel. You're right - a buzz cut should be quick & not too difficult.
DS had his head shaved but it's already growing back. He said he may start doing it himself. The barbers and stylists have been opened back up since late May, but I haven't made it by yet. This coming week might be it - it's getting too hot for all this hair.
Our dogs would likely agree with that cat & dog on being named after passwords. Of course, they have no idea it's the other way around. I mix them up & add things to try to make them harder to hack.

Technically, barber shops and hair salons could be open here now as of Friday last week, but most aren't because of the ridiculous amount of restrictions that they have to abide by:
Appointments only, no more than one customer in the place at a time, must check and keep log of customer temperatures before letting them in, must keep log of customer IDs for potential "contact tracing", everything must be wiped down and all tools sanitized after each use, and the barber/stylist must wear so much protective gear that they can hardly move.

Dad's hair cut turned out good, but then Mom decided that she wanted me to trim her hair too.
Hers turned out pretty good too I think, but I really don't have much experience with doing women's hair styles so we stuck with a very basic trim to shorten it up a bit all round and get the front bangs out of her eyes.
I also made a quick run to the grocery store for them, and we made baked fish fillets topped with salsa con queso for an early lunch.

It's pretty much like that here, I think. It's appointment only. I know someone stepped outside & took Edward's temperature before allowing him inside. I'm not sure they're limited to only 1 at a time - I need to ask him about that. No one is allowed to wait inside, so you can't bring kids with you. I know he had to wear a mask, and his stylist wore a mask and gloves. I'll have to ask him for more details before I make an appt.
Happy to hear your folks' haircuts turned out well.

When I was at the grocery store this morning, the usual spaces for both Aunt Jemima and Mrs Buttersworth pancake syrups were filled in with Log Cabin syrup instead.

The latest victim of this nonsense is Eskimo Pie Bars. If they are smart they will give them a New England name, "Choclit Cahvid Bahs!" If you try to hurt us by making fum of our accent you only make us stronger. They'll sell like hotcakes.

Aunt Jemima is my favorite of the three brands, but Mrs Buttersworth isn't bad either as long as you stay away from the lite kind which tastes OK but is just too runny to stay on your pancakes. The latest victim of this nonsense is Eskimo Pie Bars. If they are smart they will give them a New England name, "Choclit Cahvid Bahs!" If you try to hurt us by making fum of our accent you only make us stronger. They'll sell like hotcakes. I haven't seen an Eskimo Pie in stores around here in years. I didn't know that they were still made. I used to love them when I was a kid.

All we had at home as I was growing up was Log Cabin. I continued that tradition - just didn't try anything else for about the next 35 yrs. Somehow got hooked on real organic maple syrup with nothing added. That's all we've had in the house for the last 10 yrs.

Good morning! We've had several hours of brilliant lightning - most of it high up in the clouds, and thunder. I'm not sure we've received a drop of rain, and I'm fine with that. It's finally starting to move on; I can see sunshine. We've had enough rain for all of June & July. When I was at the grocery store this morning, the usual spaces for both Aunt Jemima and Mrs Buttersworth pancake syrups were filled in with Log Cabin syrup instead. At the commissary on Thursday, there just wasn't much syrup on the shelves at all. There were several varieties of Log Cabin, and the top shelf had the typical pure maple syrup bottles. We don't use much syrup - pancakes and waffles are special treats around this house. I have a beautiful piece of real beef - a London Broil - in the crockpot. It has mushroom soup, vegetable broth, a spoonful of herbs, and I'll add some reconstituted portabello mushrooms about mid-afternoon. We have a #10 can of freeze-dried portabello mushroom pieces and I think that's one of the best buys we've made in 20 yrs! We're determined to eat up our prep stocks so we can buy some more and start over fresh. We don't have a lot, unlike some of our prepper friends. (y'know, the type who can live off the grid out in the mountains somewhere)

My Dad was admitted to the hospital this morning with a possible heart attack. He is stable for now, but we are still waiting for test results before they decide how to procede.

This odd weather may be keeping DS & L and the grands at home today. They were going to go to a water park just across the border in Texas, "but the clouds and rain, well, you know", as DS put it. Our local newspaper has an Associated Press article as its top of front page lead story. The article is titled, "Trump comeback rally features empty seats, staff infections." The article is so slanted, it probably comes close to the definition of "yellow journalism". This is the only newsprint paper being distributed in this state any more, and it's pitiful. I was this close -->| |<-- to suggesting to Edward that we cancel our subscription. When I finally sat down a couple hours ago with the last of the coffee and told him, he laughed. He agrees, but says he knows we would miss the paper nonetheless. Yeh, I suppose so. Pathways to Victory (1st Baptist Dallas) is re-running a series of sermons re: America in the Bible. Today's was titled, "When Persecution Comes ..." The focus was on the persecution of Christians in the United States. It was interesting, especially in light of recent nationwide events.
