I had breakfast (pancakes and scrambled eggs) for supper this evening. The snow that we had this morning all melted this afternoon, but now the temperature is really dropping again. It was down to 25 the last time that I checked.

This will be a great place to spend the winter, Mel. I've always thought it would be neat to snowbird in a warm beach town, but haven't yet had that opportunity. So I'll hang out here in SW Okla and enjoy the local happenings. My friend who retired to the west coast of Florida is posting things like this on her fb page & I keep telling her maybe one of these days we'll come for the holidays!
One of our tenants called me about 30 minutes after I'd locked up & left the office. I was pulling up to the post office dropbox & just wanted to end my work day, but I knew she might really need something so I answered the phone. Poor woman was stuck in her backyard with her young son who is autistic. They'd been yelling for help, but she figured the neighbors couldn't hear her. The sky was pretty overcast, and it was just past sundown anyway. She told me she was terrified. I asked for a little more detail - wasn't sure if she had her feet stuck in mud or had pulled her car around back & buried the wheels. Either could happen. She's lived there a couple of months but this was their first walk into the backyard, she said. The wind caught the gate on the privacy fence & slammed it shut. The latch was on the outside, while she & child were on the inside. I told her I'd come, just stay calm. Told her when I pulled up out front, I'd walk toward the gate & call her name so she'd know it was me. She told me not to worry, she was standing on some old pallets she'd found & could just barely see over the top of the privacy fence; said she'd see me pull up & I'd be able to see her too. And there she was - I could see her from about her mouth to the top of her head. She's a small woman, but gutsy. I walked up & unlatched the gate - it's new & feels like it's spring-loaded to shut tight, and the latch has no slack in it either. When I pulled the gate open, she visibly sighed with relief. We both laughed. She said she hadn't been sure she'd get them out of that backyard tonight. She further explained they've never come out the kitchen door so it's not been unlocked in the 2 months she's lived there. I'm guessing she doesn't have any family or friends nearby. Her son is 6 or 7, and he's vocal & active, full of smiles - hard to believe he's autistic. He seemed to think being stuck in the backyard was a big adventure. She's hoping to put a playset with swings back there for him. She kept apologizing and I kept assuring her she hadn't inconvenienced me in the least bit as I was heading on post to pick up dog food at the commissary and she was on the way. We chatted a couple minutes, wished each other "Merry Christmas!" and I left her & her son heading for their front door. I'm thankful I was able to help her. She's about 7 months into an at-risk pregnancy now. She & that little boy did not need to be outside on that damp ground with darkness falling. Yes, I thanked God for sending me! This job ... I'm thankful to have it, even with the stress in the office these days. I read an article this evening about how to tell when it's time to move on from your current position. Mm, yeh, I'm right where I belong, job-wise. See y'all tomorrow.

Good morning! It is a breezy 25 degrees here this morning with a wind chill of 20. Looking out the front window, the cars parked along the street have a heavy coat of frost on them. For the first time in quite a while, I slept through the night with no weird dreams (or at least none that I can remember). I don't really need much, but I want to stock up on groceries today so that I don't need to go to the store over the holiday weekend, but I'll wait until it warms up a bit. We're forecast to reach the mid 40s by early this afternoon. Today is the last day for school here until after New Year. Only 5 days till !

I saw this on Facebook this morning, and it reminded me of something that they used to do at the church where my family went when I was a kid. On the last Sunday before Christmas each year, everyone in the congregation would be given an orange and a little box of candy in their Sunday School classes.

Good morning! 45 at 8:30 a.m. The temperature may reach 65 this afternoon. It's really overcast at present. That Ezri - what a little sweetheart! Glad you had a good night's sleep finally, Mel. I need to pick up a carton of eggnog & a box of vanilla pudding mix before the end of the week. Edward is going to make an eggnog pie this weekend. I'm hoping that's all I need. I think I have plenty on-hand to cook Christmas dinner. Hope y'all have a great Wednesday.

We ran out to the mountains this afternoon to check on the propane furnace. It seems to be working fine - filter wasn't quite seated right so the metal panel on the bottom wouldn't seat correctly, and there were some slightly loose connections. The fan is making a noise like bicycle spokes clicking on playing cards. I'm calling one of our top HVAC repairmen to see if he can get out there & service the unit, and see if that fan needs oiled and adjusted or replaced. We drove through part of the area - we hadn't been out there in a really, re-ally long time. It looks so different. It's really gotten built up, but not with any plan or design. I don't miss the place, considering what it looks like these days. One of my goals for 2024 is to sell that house, preferably to the tenants. We stopped at the Mexican restaurant closest to home & ate dinner. We hadn't had lunch so dinner at 5 p.m. was all right! I have to find some insurance papers this evening ... they should be in email so I'll be hunting soon as I post this. Hope you're all doing well. ...... Just think, tomorrow is the shortest day of the year, but the longest night. Those of us who wilt in the dark should start to grow by the 1st of February - here in SW Okla, on Feb 1st, we'll have sunrise at 7:30 a.m. and sunset will come at 6:03 p.m. It's a real start.
