After Cracker Barrel adds vegan sausage to its menu, some customers say the chain is too "woke"Bright and early on a Monday morning, the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store unexpectedly ignited a culture war on social media. It began with a two-sentence Facebook post: "Discover new meat frontiers. Experience the out of this world flavor of Impossible™ Sausage Made From Plants next time you Build Your Own Breakfast." Below the caption was a photograph of a plate of cheesy hashbrown casserole, scrambled eggs and two sausage patties (which you likely wouldn't have known were vegan had one not been speared with a little toothpick flag bearing the Impossible logo). All things considered, it was a fairly innocuous post. From Burger King's Impossible Whopper to KFC's vegan nuggets, chain restaurants and fast-food joints across the country have been adding plant-based options to their menus over the past few years. Some of Cracker Barrel's customers, however, bristled at the announcement, denouncing the new menu offering as alleged evidence of the chain caving to "wokeness." "We don't eat in an old country store for woke burgers," one commenter wrote, while someone else added: "I just lost respect for a once great Tennessee company." "Not going to happen!" another customer vowed. "Cracker Barrel use[d] to be so good, we looked forward to eating in them but not anymore." Of course, as the laws of the internet seemingly dictate, those sincere expressions of outrage began to serve as a template for more ironic comments (at least I hope they were ironic) like "The fact that you sell stuff other than crackers in barrels is why I'll never go here again!!!!" and "YOU CAN TAKE MY PORK SAUSAGE WHEN YOU PRY IT FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS!!" Another contribution to the conversation? "This is the future us leftists want. For the domain of all right winged red necks to turn on them and force veganism upon them," one woman wrote. "Next they'll be donating proceeds to BLM and trans youth. After that we're coming for Waffle House and Walmart. You've been warned. The revolution is nigh." www.salon.com/2022/08/05/after-cracker-barrel-adds-vegan-sausage-to-its-menu-some-customers-say-the-chain-is-too-woke/?fbclid=IwAR1PCZ1oBJV1lApvJaF5O6WwyCWeTlCkxnfpaGL2G3vSM7oJa8111HgEK-sCracker Barrel is one of my favorite restaurants, but I don't think that I will be trying this new "sausage".

We only liked breakfast at Cracker Barrel. We've only gone there 3 or 4 times since places re-opened as the virus nonsense waned. They offered turkey sausage, which meant we could have regular, complete breakfasts. We went there in June, and discovered they'd stopped offering turkey sausage. We couldn't really put together a whole breakfast without some sort of meat. They also don't offer pancakes the way they used to. They still have them, but they're not a side dish in part of a typical breakfast; they're the main feature in one of their breakfast offerings. I think we ordered whatever their version of chicken friend steak was. We were disappointed. Decided that will no longer be a place we pick if we want to go out to breakfast. So - going woke by serving a plant-based sausage just leaves us rolling our eyes.

I'm not sure if they ever had turkey sausage, but they do have a really good spicy chicken sausage. I don't usually care for chicken, but I do like that sausage. For lunch I sometimes get either their chef salad or their hamburger steak with a baked potato and cole slaw. I do really miss their Reuben sandwich that was taken off the menu a year or so back.

Beyond Meat sales drop as fast-food trials flop; McDonald’s is ‘McDone’ with plant burgerBeyond Meat’s sales have fizzled rather than sizzled after fast-food trials of its product had customers asking, “Where’s the beef?” McDonald’s is the latest fast-food giant to complete a trial of a Beyond Meat plant-based product (the McPlant burger). JPMorgan Chase & Co. analyst Ken Goldman released a market research note that indicated the product was being broadly discontinued in the U.S. last Thursday. The two companies signed a three-year global distribution deal in 2021. Mr. Goldman, who spoke with employees at 25 McDonald’s locations, wrote that “Not surprisingly, the reason sometimes being cited is that the product did not sell well enough” and that the product was “McDone” in the U.S., according to The Fly, a financial news site. Other trials at Panda Express and Yum! Brands (KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut) have also ended without a subsequent product launch. Beyond Meat products at Dunkin’, Hardee’s, and A&W have been discontinued after launching. www.washingtontimes.com/news/2022/aug/4/beyond-meat-sales-drop-as-fast-food-trials-flop-mc/

Beyond Meat Cuts Jobs in Cost-Cutting MovePlant-based meat maker Beyond Meat Inc. eliminated about 40 positions as part of a broader cost-cutting plan, Chief Executive Officer Ethan Brown told employees in an internal memo. Wall Street has turned pessimistic: The company’s shares have fallen almost 50% so far in 2022. They declined a similar amount in 2021. David Trainer, chief executive officer of investment research firm New Constructs, flagged concerns about the company’s cash on hand in a recent research note and in a phone interview. “Beyond Meat has failed to generate any positive free cash flow since going public in 2019,” Trainer wrote in a note dated Aug. 2. He said the $548 million in cash the company had at the end of the first quarter is only enough to sustain its current level of spending through 10 months after the period ended on April 2. “Raising additional capital to fund further cash burn would likely come at a high cost and be bad news for existing and new shareholders,” Trainer wrote. www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-03/beyond-meat-eliminates-about-40-positions-in-cost-cutting-move

Taco Bell testing new vegan meat alternative(CNN) - Taco Bell is testing a new plant-based meat alternative at some of its locations. The fast-food chain announced it has debuted a new crispy melt taco at some restaurants in Alabama. Unlike its other new items, this product is being tested with Taco Bell’s new proprietary plant-based protein. According to the company, the product is a soy and pea protein blend inspired by classic Taco Bell flavors. www.kktv.com/2022/08/19/taco-bell-testing-new-vegan-meat-alternative/

I thought it would be ground black beans for a mild version & ground jalapeños for the spicy version. : rolleyes LOL - yknow, I'd try a faux meat that was made out of real food. No phony baloney, however.

OK, i admit that this one is a bit off topic for this thread, but I thought it belongs here because it still ties in with the whole business of this insane push for alternative food sources. Cockroach Milk Touted by Scientists as “Over Three Times More Nutritious” Than Cow’s Milk
The push to normalize insect consumption has been going on for years, with scientists promoting cockroach milk that is allegedly “more nutritious” than its bovine counterpart. Back in 2016, a team of scientists from the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (InStem) in India sequenced a protein crystal found in the mid-gut of the Pacific beetle cockroach (Diploptera punctata). The crystal found in the milk secreted by the insect to feed its young was over three times more nutritious than cow’s milk. According to the InStem researchers, this crystal found in D. punctata could be the key to feeding the population in the future. A single protein crystal contains more than thrice the amount of energy found in an equivalent amount of buffalo milk. ussanews.com/2022/08/28/cockroach-milk-touted-by-scientists-as-over-three-times-more-nutritious-than-cows-milk/So, how exactly do you go about milking a cockroach? And how many of them do you need to milk to get a gallon of the stuff? This idea might actually make some of the other things that have been discussed in this thread almost look good by comparison.

The lack of appetite for fake meat means layoffs at Beyond MeatBeyond Meat will cut 19% of its global workforce, or about 200 employees, the company said in a regulatory filing (pdf) on Oct. 14, suggesting that plant-based meat’s popularity has sizzled out. The cuts are expected to be completed by end of the year, and the company’s goal is to become cash-flow positive within the second half of 2023. The alternative-protein company also announced changes to its leadership in the filing, including the exit of its chief operating officer Douglas Ramsey who was recently arrested for assault after allegedly biting a man’s nose outside an Arkansas football game. The company said Ramsey’s last day of employment is Oct. 14. The workforce reduction comes at a moment when Beyond Meat’s financials are looking bleak. The Los Angeles-based company, which went public in 2019, said it expects third-quarter revenue to be down 23% compared to the same period last year. Beyond Meat’s stock is down 50% since the start of the year. www.yahoo.com/entertainment/lack-appetite-fake-meat-means-185900952.html

Laughing is probably not polite, but I can't help it. Do you suppose the COO was desperate for a little 'meat' in his diet when he bit the guy's nose? Attachment Deleted
