Canadian Police Accidentally Stream Press Conference Using Cat Filter
Canada’s national police force live-streamed a press conference regarding a double homicide on Friday and added animated cat-like features to the presiding officer. Facebook’s video technology has the capabilities of overlaying the recording with filters that distort or change the video’s subject. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police of British Columbia appear to have used a Facebook filter on Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, who led the briefing, that included whiskers and cat ears. The national police later clarified on Twitter that the use of the filter was inadvertent.

That was a horribly serious news story ... a double homicide ... and there was that awful gaffe with a cat filter.
The female officer who did this live newscast really kept her head when the updated (i.e., without cat filter) report was posted on facebook. She's a real professional.
A news story on the 2 people who were murdered appeared on the local news this evening. This is such a sad case.

Yes, it is awful that this happened on such a serious story, but it goes to show just how ridiculously far social media has invaded all areas of life. Why does a serious news broadcaster need funny Facebook filters on their cameras? This isn't the first time this cat filter has "inadvertently" appeared on a recent news broadcast.
Cat filter accidentally used in Pakistani minister’s live press conference
A Pakistani politician's live-streamed press conference descended into farce when a cat filter was switched on by mistake. Shaukat Yousafzai was briefing journalists last Friday when the setting was accidentally turned on. Facebook users watching the video live commented on the gaffe, but Mr Yousafzai carried on unaware of his feline features.

This kind of "playing around" on work time should not be permitted, imo. Filters should not be used on newscasts, not even on "feel good" local stories. So, no .... I have no idea why this, or any, news production crew would have a cat filter - or any other "cute" filter - as part of their software. I'll admit it - I chuckled when I first looked at the photo of the RCMP officer, until I read your post (yeh, I started at the and looked at the photo and then went to the top of the post), and then I loaded up the article at the link and read it, plus watched the updated news story. You can just imagine how the families of the victims felt, if they saw that first live report, complete with cat features. The fact that the Pakistani politician suffered the same gaffe, and he was unaware of it, shows how easily this can happen. There needs to be a new industry standard that prevents it.

Perhaps I'm overthinking this, but it seems to me that so many if not most among the media are more interested in entertaining the masses and/or pushing an agenda rather than doing their actual job of simply informing the public of the news.

In hind sight, I believe that I was wrong to post such a potentially disturbing story in Anything Goes. So I am moving it to Christian chat and modifying the thread title.

Definitely agree with you on this! I watch the news and so often think of Don Henley's song, Dirty Laundry. I make my living off the evening news Just give me something, something I can use People love it when you lose They love dirty laundry ... We got the bubble-headed bleached-blonde Comes on at five She can tell you 'bout the plane crash With a gleam in her eye It's interesting when people die Give us dirty laundry . . . and so it goes. Great song! Pretty accurate! Wikipedia had this to say: There's been an update on this story. The 2 teens who are suspected of killing this couple, and killing a guy in his 60s, are still on the run. The younger of the two is expected to not allow himself to be taken alive. His father was interviewed on the news this evening - he was visibly upset; said his son wanted to go out in a "blaze of glory." He's expecting his son to be dead by tonight or sometime tomorrow. I feel for that man -- he thinks his son is full of pain, tho' he didn't elaborate. I cannot imagine the horror involved in this for the families of those 2 teens.
