The giant package of Potato Rolls that will be dropped to ring in the new year in downtown Chambersburg this evening. View AttachmentPhoto borrowed from our local newspaper's Facebook page. www.facebook.com/publicopinionnewsTwo of our neighboring towns will be dropping a giant pizza and a giant donut. Those are great traditions! Nobody around this part of the state does anything like that. If I'm still up at midnight, which may or may not happen, I'll be like the cat in the blue pj's. Are you eating any of those traditional foods to celebrate the New Year, Mel? The tenant I took a key to was quiet, but he smiled behind his mask (which he always wears-indoors/outdoors, in his car ). He admitted he broke the front window on his apt and that he will pay for it. He also agreed to pay the lockout fee. I wished him, and his next door neighbor (who's one of our biggest troublemakers), a Happy New Year and I left. So ... back to Saturday at my house. I'm praying for DD#4 & her kiddos, and for you, Jeanette. Hope they recover soon & you regain your strength.

Are you eating any of those traditional foods to celebrate the New Year, Mel? I got some sauerkraut from the grocery store the other day for my New Year's dinner, but I'm not cooking it with pork. I like my kraut cold right out of the jar. My grandfather got me started eating it that way when I was a kid. Grandma used to make and can her own kraut, and Grandpa and Dad would sneak down to the room in the basement where she stored her canned goods in the middle of the night and eat cold kraut for a midnight snack.

What a great story! I hope you enjoy your sauerkraut this evening. I like sauerkraut, but only in small amounts (it upsets my stomach for some reason ). I like most foods hot - one of my quirks, I think, unless it's a green salad, or something cold to drink on a hot day.

I was so angry earlier that I would have liked to have hit a guy - except I could see him raising a big stink as "the victim" and me getting arrested. I haven't been that angry in a really long time. The dogs were out back, barking like they wanted to eat up something really evil. I hurried out there to see what it was. I could hear a guy talking in a quiet voice but couldn't tell what he was doing. I thought he might have a puppy with him on the street side of our privacy fence. It proved to be a guy in his early-to-mid 20s with a little girl who probably wasn't yet a year old, tho' she was toddling along very slowly, holding onto some kind of a cart (not exactly a kid's stroller of any kind I've ever seen, but also not as big as our garden cart). He was slowly moving back & forth along our fence, and it was driving Milo & Leela nutty. Next thing I realized was he was trying to force his little girl's fingers in between the fence pickets to touch the dogs! He doesn't know us, we don't know him - Milo acted as if the guy was an aggressor and wanted to attack him. I yelled at the guy to stop - and he didn't. I was right there at the fence telling him not to put his fingers between those pickets because those dogs don't know him! He argued that it would be ok & held the side of his finger against a space but it wasn't wide enough, thankfully, for him to stick his finger in more than about 1/16th of an inch. Leela licked at his finger and he said, "see, it's alright!" and he grabbed the little girl's hand and tried to force her fingers in that small space. I yelled at him again to stop, told him to take his hands and her away from my fence. I stood up & yelled at the dogs to c'mon! I got them to come in the house but he didn't leave - walked back & forth, muttering something. I yelled that it was really pitiful when a person couldn't enjoy their own backyard in privacy! I shut the doggy door and stormed through the living room, shouting to Edward about the " idiot" who was egging on our dogs, using his baby girl as "bait", basically. I went right out the front door and across the short side of the yard till I was at our front fence corner. The guy was across the green belt, and just getting to the leading edge of the next circle street. He was looking back & saw me. I yelled at him to "KEEP. YOUR. HANDS. OFF. MY. FENCE. GOT IT?!?" He nodded & waved so I nodded gave him a . It took awhile, but Edward laid down for a nap & I worked on laundry & dishes and finally my headache started to let up. After a couple of hours I went out back with the dogs. Milo ran right to the spots where the guy had been trying to stick his fingers through & the little girl's. He licked the sides of those fence pickets - there were 4 spots. I had thought there were only 2 spots. I walked the fence and found a place where a board recently has warped some more and I could slide almost my whole hand through the space at an angle. I just can't have that. Then I was furious with the guy who was supposed to replace about half our fence the first week of October and didn't - and we haven't been able to reach him by phone or text. He & DS went to high school together and he spent countless hours & whole weekends at our house back in those days. I don't know why he didn't do the job or at least contact us to say he couldn't. <-- his not renovating half the fence just left me speechless this afternoon. I'd file that under "irresponsibility". Edward got up from his nap - he's fighting a cold and I was happy he slept so well - and came outside & put a big framed screen over that space in the fence and held it in place with some concrete blocks. 'Something weird' happened at that side of the fence last evening too, right after dark. All the dogs in the neighborhood were going crazy. I walked out back & could tell there was some guy outside our fence muttering. I yelled, "my-LOWWWW" and "LEE-luh" and the 2 of them came running and all the other dogs stopped barking. A guy coughed once - sounded like he was right outside that side fence. I stood stockstill & didn't see any movement - the neighbor's Christmas lights are still on so you can see shadow movement. It struck me as creepy, but I didn't think any more of it till today's episode. I'll be watching like a hawk. If I think of it in the morning, I'll get out my stun gun to carry around the backyard with me when I go out with the dogs. Okay ... end of rant! I love y'all!

Some people have no common sense at all. Bad enough to pull a stupid stunt like that himself, but to try to teach a baby to do such potentially dangerous foolishness... I'll be watching like a hawk. If I think of it in the morning, I'll get out my stun gun to carry around the backyard with me when I go out with the dogs. I remember my grandfather talking about how in his younger days they used shotgun shells loaded with rock salt to scare off tresspassers from their farm.

Good morning! It looks like we are going to have a warm and sunny day here. For New Year's Day, our church is just having a time of fellowship this morning rather than a regular church service; so no sermon to post this week, but we will be back as usual next week. Hope you are all having a great first day of 2023!

Barb, Your idiot visitor that was bothering your dogs last night made me think of this news story from a few weeks ago: Man Loses Arm Attempting The New TikTok “Pet A Shark” ChallengeSan Diego, CA- Brad Billings (22), is recovering in a San Diego area hospital after a shark bit off his right arm this past weekend. Brad wanted to complete a new social media challenge on TikTok, where you must pet a shark in the wild. Internet challenges have had disastrous results over the years and this new “Pet a shark” challenge was turning out to be no different. Brad skipped the tide pod challenge a few years back, but was ready to shine by petting a shark in the wild. He rented a boat and rode out off the coast of San Diego in search of a shark. About an hour into his foray into the pacific, Brad spotted a Great White shark in the distance. Slowly he closed the distance between him and the shark. When he was close enough, he threw a couple cheap steaks into the water to draw the shark in. When the Great White was within arms reach, Brad extended his right arm while attempting to film the event with his phone in his left hand. Leaning in to pet the shark, it abruptly lunged upward and bit off his right arm. Stumbling backwards, Brad dropped his phone in the ocean. Stunned, he still had the presence of mind to race the boat back to shore and get help. kvta4.com/science/man-loses-arm-attempting-the-new-tiktok-pet-a-shark-challenge/?fbclid=IwAR15bILKG8If8lmG_ojQkGOiK2H73ZqSI2-2kCtyXLPxPuFu9PcDRAKTOSo

This is great -- That's neat that the rain stopped 'just in time'. Stunned, he still had the presence of mind to race the boat back to shore and get help. Oh, my goodness - I laughed so hard, reading that article! Yeh, it's terrible the guy lost his arm, BUT ... why would anybody do something sooo dumb?!? Of course, I served with a warrant officer in the early 80s who had 'almost' as wild a story, along the lines of feeding something that could eat you. Some buddies talked him into going out one night to shoot coyotes. The buddies brought along some amount of raw meat and threw it out in the brush, all around them, in a circle. Then they waited for the coyotes to arrive, which happened shortly. A bunch of coyotes came, and made a big growling-howling as they fought over the meat. The guys were too terrified to shoot as they were afraid that would call more attention to themselves than they could fight off. Once the coyotes polished off the meat and left, those guys ran as fast as they could go to their truck and raced away.

Quiet night around here last night. DS went to the City (Okla City) to celebrate the New Year with a former college roommate. Plenty of neighbors around these parts set off fireworks last night, late. They didn't continue too long, thankfully, as it upset even Milo - who basically isn't bothered by artillery, thunderstorms, or high winds. I gave them each a calming chew before we piled into bed and slept soundly. Dr. Jeffress started a new series, What Christians Need to Know, with 10 topics. I'm hoping to get some ideas on how to answer the naysayers. I can generally hold my own, even if I have to say, "wait a minute - let me pull up the scripture I'm thinking of!", but I'd like to feel more confident in discussing 'why' someone should accept the Bible as inerrant, "what" happens at death, and what's actually the nature of hell - it's not a big party time full of scoffers! <--talking about Jesus is what I can do best; it's beating back all these other ridiculous comments that I sometimes get flustered about, or I come on too strong. We may set a record high temp this afternoon. It's currently 76 with barely a breeze. Hope you each and all have a wonderful first day of 2023!

Edward has felt low-level crummy this weekend. He's laughed & groaned. He thinks it's something between a cold & a mild virus. He's slightly fevered this afternoon so he took some vitamins & a cold tablet, and then I whipped him up an old-timey cold remedy. Hope that helps him! I just suggested he take a nap and I think he's going to. Thought I'd try this old-timey remedy too. My nose has been dripping since Thursday afternoon. I'll let you know if either of us thinks it helps.

‘Evening Everyone We didn’t stay up ‘til midnight, close to it! The sounds outside of folks setting off fireworks etc went on for a long time after midnight, it seemed to me.
We actually got to worship service today & had communion.
Afterwards, we went to Big Ben’s Pub to watch the Eagles football game. It wasn’t overly crowded, still a lot of Eagle’s fans, so that was nice! There was one Saint’s fan where we were, he was loud & foul mouth. Thankful nothing came of his baiting people! Thankful there was security men there, if needed.
This is one of 3 or 4 sports bars & restaurants that our son-in-law #2, is in a partnership with 3 or 4 other folks. His is in another location.
After the game, we drove to DD#3 & her DH’s home, where DD#4’s hubby & two kiddos were visiting with their little doggie. They head back to DD#4 & 3 younger grands tomorrow.
Home & enjoying some quiet while the next football game is on between the Steelers & Ravens.

Incredible stories of stupidity re the man & baby baiting your doggies, Barb, and that warrant officer & coyotes, as well as the shark biting the arm off from that 22 yr old, Mel!
