DUBAI, United Arab Emirates—Saudi authorities have conducted their biggest-ever crackdown on camel beauty contestants that received Botox injections and other artificial touch-ups, the state-run Saudi Press Agency reported Wednesday, with over 40 camels disqualified from the annual pageant. Saudi Arabia’s popular King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, which kicked off earlier this month, invites the breeders of the most beautiful camels to compete for some $66 million in prize money. Botox injections, face lifts, and other cosmetic alterations to make the camels more attractive are strictly prohibited. Jurors decide the winner based on the shape of the camels’ heads, necks, humps, dress, and postures. Judges at the monthlong festival in the desert northeast of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, are escalating their clamp down on artificially enhanced camels, the official news agency reported, using “specialized and advanced” technology to detect tampering. www.ntd.com/dozens-of-camels-barred-from-saudi-beauty-contest-over-botox_711718.html

I had expected this to be a funny BabylonBee article. It's shocking to discover that it's a real, live-action on-going happening. Those poor animals! This is animal cruelty! This is heartbreaking! Where's PETA when they might actually be able to support a worthwhile cause?!? In the early 1980s, I worked on a defense contract for 3 years that involved the Saudi Arabian National Guard. The corporation still has a large jobsite in Riyadh, as far as I know. It was a great contract, worthwhile. Our stateside team enjoyed the visits by our fellow contractors when they came home on mid-tour break. They had riotous stories about working with the Saudis, traveling over un-mapped portions of the desert, the Bedouins and their camps that moved around like nomads. My, how life in Saudi has changed! Sounds like they've become a pretty worldly folk over the past 40 years. I used to regularly pray for those Bedouins. Sounds now like I need to pray for their camels!
