A school board member in Florida is being criticized after saying she was "honored" to chaperone a group of elementary school students on a field trip to a gay bar. Broward County School Board member Sarah Leonardi said she took the children of Wilton Manors Elementary School to Rosie's Bar & Grill on what appeared to be an annual field trip, according to a Wednesday social media post by Leonardi. "I was SO honored to be invited to chaperone Wilton Manors Elementary's field trip to the incredible Rosie's!" she posted to Facebook with pictures. "The students and I had a fun walk over and learned a lot about our community! A huge thank you to Rosie's Bar and Grill for hosting this special field trip every year!" www.yahoo.com/news/elementary-school-students-taken-gay-163000156.html

The article doesn't tell the age range of the elementary students who went on this trip. 11-12 yr olds could be middle schoolers & so not there. That would leave K thru 5th grade (5-10 or 11). I wouldn't want my high schooler to attend a heathen field trip to Rosie's Bar. I wouldn't want want my child, under the age of 18, to attend a heathen field trip to Rosie's Bar if it were a "straight" venue, with juke boxes & pool table, tables & a bar. Surely parents had to sign a permission slip to allow their children to go - no? I don't see any details in the article, so I can't tell. Any parents who supported this field trip are godless heathens, right along with the teacher involved and the school staff who didn't stop this mess. And if I were a parent who hadn't been informed of the full details on this field trip, somebody would have to hold me down because I'd be in the pricipal's office asking for details & letting them know that my next stop was the school board, and then the state superintendent's office, and, oh, btw, I'd have already called my attorney. I'd be recording all the comments as well. If heads didn't immediately roll, I'd be going through the process of dis-enrolling my child, if I didn't also do that anyway. How could we ever trust those people at that school again? I couldn't.

If the parents did sign permission slips for this trip, I would be interested to know what the parents were told that the permission slips were for.
Did they know the true nature of the trip or were they lied to about where the kids would be going?
I have no trust left in the integrity of most of our public school officials.

It almost sounded like it was a walk around the neighborhood, so if this place was within reasonable walking distance of the school, it's possible the parents had no idea. When DS was a young child pre-K and K (25 years ago), he was enrolled at the First Baptist Child Development Center right in the heart of downtown. Periodically in the spring, the instructors would walk the kids to a large playground with a wading pool, & the kids loved it. They walked to the mall a couple of times a year to eat pizza and ice cream. They walked to the fire dept during the annual fire prevention campaign - got to do a lot of fun stuff there with "stop, drop, & roll", and crawling through a "smoky" hallway. All great things for young kids to do. There were no bars or seedy establishments downtown by that time, but 20 years before there had been. If today's culture had existed back then (mid-60s to early-70s), they could have had the kids traipsing through some pretty bad places and how we would have known as parents? We'd have simply expected our kids to be out getting some fresh air, having some directed activities that were fun, etc. I'd be really curious to know more about that field trip to Rosie's Bar. As for your comment, Well, I don't have any trust left in very many of them either.
