Congressional Democrats introduced a bill Friday to rename more than 1,000 places in the US named with offensive language and racist slurs. Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Edward Markey, and Rep. Al Green introduced the bill along with 25 cosponsors in the House of Representatives, all Democrats. Lawmakers first introduced the bill last year with Rep. Deb Haaland, who now serves as the secretary of the interior as the first Native American cabinet secretary in US history. "We need to immediately stop honoring the ugly legacy of racism and bigotry, and that's why I'm introducing the Reconciliation in Place Names Act with my colleagues," Warren said in a statement. The bill would take aim at land units and geographic features, like forests, streams, and wilderness areas, with racist or bigoted names. It would create a process to review and rename places with inoffensive names. According to the statement from the lawmakers, questionable names have been identified for 1,441 federally recognized places. www.yahoo.com/news/democrats-introduced-bill-rename-more-034814913.html

Warren is a disgrace - to women, to politicians who actually accomplish projects that need doing, to probably more (I'm too hot & tired to think of 'more'. ). I'd like to see the list, as it's put together ... Okay, I'll agree, nothing needs to use the n-word in its name, that's a real old idea. As for the word "squaw", I don't know the 'why' behind that word to know what makes it objectionable. If I get around to it, I'll do some research, or maybe ask some of my Native American friends. The Comanche Tribe lobbied for & succeeded in changing the name of a long-running creek in this town a few years back. Squaw Creek is now Numu Creek, a Comanche word. I wonder if they'll go after names like "dago", which is a slur on Italians? Or "spic", which is a slur on Latin Americans? "Mick" as a slur on an Irishman? Redneck, hillbilly, whitey? There are whole reference works of ethnic slurs online. Who knew? And here's one that floored me. Should we get rid of the classic clown figure, as it has a history of being a slur on the Irish? www.rsdb.org/search?q=irish

The Irish-Clown connection was a surprise, but I had more than 1 uncle who that slur could have been aimed at. (They weren't bad guys, they simply drank too much too often. )
