(Reuters) - The U.S. Food & Drug Administration on Friday said Johnson & Johnson must throw away millions of doses of its COVID-19 vaccine that were manufactured at a problem-plagued Baltimore factory but also cleared millions for use.
Two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters that the agency had cleared about 10 million doses. The New York Times said that the batches being discarded amount to around 60 million doses, citing people familiar with the matter.
Without disclosing or confirming the number of vaccine doses, the FDA said in a news release that it had authorized two batches of the vaccine for use, that several other batches were not suitable for use and that others were being evaluated.

There are many - probably millions of - doses, by J&J and by Moderna, that are set to expire shortly, may be the end of this month. There's a move afoot to request the FDA extend the expiration dates on these doses because it will be such a waste of doses that could be put into people, after all. Let's just say, if I were going to take the vaccine, which I'm not, I surely wouldn't want an expired dose that had been cleared at the last minute for use ... instead of sending it to the landfill. I won't believe there's any altruistic, good-intended thinking behind the extension, if it occurs. I believe the almighty dollar will be the bottomline behind extension approval, if it happens. (and I'm hoping an extension is not granted ).
