Looks like a well-known advertising icon is getting furloughed ― and it isn’t temporary. Land O’Lakes is removing the Native American woman who has appeared on its containers of butter and margarine since 1928. Instead, future packages will showcase photos of real Land O’Lakes farmers and co-op members, along with the phrase “Proud to be Farmer-Owned,” according to a company release. The Grand Forks Tribune noted that many Native people, including North Dakota state Rep. Ruth Buffalo (D), have called the woman’s image racist. Buffalo told the paper the image goes “hand-in-hand with human and sex trafficking of our women and girls.… by depicting Native women as sex objects.”

Well, this is sad, really. I always thought this was a really nice picture - all American. It seems like every-thing gets tagged as "racist" these days. I don't always see anything racist about whatever is being labeled. I read up on the prank juvenile boys pull with folding the box. Juvenile boys are going to be juvenile boys. They just are. The majority of them outgrow whatever boy-bathroom-humor they've engaged in. I don't see that as affecting the Land O' Lakes gal. (I'm sometimes in the dark - I'd never heard of this prank before. ... ) But, maybe it is time for the Land O' Lakes gal to be retired. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women groups that have sprung up across North America have a valid point that we've got to stop the sex trafficking of our women and children. It's thought that 4 out of 5 Native women are subjected to violence in their lives. This is a good, tho' rather long, article on the subject here in Oklahoma Missing in Oklahoma: State could take steps to curb 'epidemic' of missing Native American womenoklahoman.com/article/5636403/missing-in-oklahoma-state-could-take-steps-to-curb-epidemic-of-missing-native-american-women
