Scientists created synthetic human fetuses using stem cells in a groundbreaking step that circumvents the need for an egg or sperm. The scientists said that these fetuses, which are like fetuses in the earliest stages of human development, can teach about the effect of genetic disorders and biological causes of recurring miscarriages. Still, their existence raises serious ethical and legal issues because there is no legislation regarding the entities that were grown in a lab in most of the world's countries currently. It's important to note that the fetuses have no beating heart or the beginning of a brain, but they do include the cells that generally would go on to create the placenta and the baby itself. Prof. Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz from Cambridge and the Technological Institute of California described the work on Wednesday at the annual meeting of the International Association of Stem Cell Research in Boston. www.jpost.com/science/article-746411

... Some days, I feel like living, breathing, real-live human beings are barely hanging on when it comes to residing on this earth. First we've got the climate-changers who think us "normal folks" should accept that all of the world's problems fall on our shoulders and we should help them reduce the population - in a variety of ways. And then you've got the abortion-happy people who are constantly thinking up new ways to justify killing babies. And now we have these people who want to create synthetic fetuses. What do you suppose that would lead to? Strikes me as a way to create a wealth of synthetic people who have no souls and no conscience so you can program them to do everything from housework to murder. They could be the new recruits for a wide-ranging army! This would give "nation-building" a whole new meaning! Heh, why don't these people work on using stem cells to cure disease in living real-live humans? Why not save babies in the womb who are ill or have malformed organs? Stop abortion. Y'know, do something good with stem cells, which are living tissue ... I'm struggling to get out good ideas here because I'm so flabbergasted that these people are thrilled to have built a synthetic, or 'pseudo' human. I don't believe this for a moment! Then stop the research! Stop spending money on its development!
