Choco Taco, a favored poolside cuisine for generations, will soon be no more after owner and ice cream maker Klondike decided to discontinue the summer treat. “Over the past 2 years, we have experienced an unprecedented spike in demand across our portfolio and have had to make very tough decisions to ensure availability of our full portfolio nationwide,” said a Klondike representative in an email. “A necessary but unfortunate part of this process is that we sometimes must discontinue products, even a beloved item like Choco Taco.” Klondike, which is owned by Unilever, continues to sell cones, shakes, and its signature Klondike bar nationwide. The Choco Taco is a waffle cone shaped like a taco shell and filled with fudge-swirled ice cream that is then dipped in chocolate and peanuts. The Choco Taco may not be found on many grocery store shelves, but it is a mainstay at community pools and ice cream trucks. Taco Bell sold the treat years ago and recently brought it back for a limited time and select locations. apnews.com/article/choco-taco-discontinued-1ce9f619c7f6edda75379b234c8818ba

Here you go! The Choco Taco Lives On in Our Hearts (and in This Recipe)If the news of our dearly departed Choco Taco has you down, pick up a few ingredients and make our homemade version. This recipe comes by way of epicurious magazine. Comments at the recipe link said the waffle bowls are easy to find and are inexpensive - usually next to the ice cream cones, particularly in Safeway stores. If anyone makes up a batch, please post how they turned out! www.epicurious.com/expert-advice/the-choco-taco-lives-on-in-our-hearts-and-in-this-recipe

Choco Tacos Are Coming Back Nationwide Thanks to Taco Bell and Salt & StrawTaco Bell is going to fill the Choco Taco-sized hole in your heart. The ice cream truck staple was discontinued in July 2022 but the fast food spot is bringing their take on Klondike’s Choco Taco this summer with help from Salt & Straw, Taco Bell is partnering with the Portland-based ice cream brand to create their version of the beloved treat. The taco shells are made with waffle cones, just like the original, and filled with cinnamon ancho chile ice cream instead of the vanilla with chocolate swirls that the discontinued version had. The dessert is dipped in chocolate and topped with toasted brown rice rather than the OG’s peanut pieces. And there's another twist on the nostalgic treat: sauce packets. Just like the fast-casual Mexican chain’s hot sauce options, the Choco Taco will be served with custom sauce packets. Some of the flavors have a kick, like the chocolate chili or mango jalapeño, but the cinnamon wild berry has less spice. Plus, the dessert is served with cheesecake dip. The dessert will be available nationwide at Salt & Straw's scoop shops and online for nationwide shipping, according to Salt & Straw’s Instagram. While a specific date has not been confirmed, the post says they are coming this summer. www.yahoo.com/entertainment/choco-tacos-coming-back-nationwide-185157978.html

So, this isn't going to be sold at Taco Bell locations? Kinda takes something away from the idea, imo. Never heard of Salt & Straw. Guess I'll pass. I rarely eat ice cream anyway, but I might try one, just for fun, if I could stop into Taco Bell and order it on a hot July afternoon.
