PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. — PETA says it's time for Punxsutawney Phil to retire and a new animatronic groundhog to take his place. “Gentle, vulnerable groundhogs are not barometers,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is offering the club a win-win situation: Breathe life into a tired tradition and finally do right by a long-suffering animal.” PETA also says Phil's current accomodations don't allow him to dig or burrow like a normal groundhog. According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website, Phil is kept in a climate-controlled environment and gets an annual checkup as his care is governed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

.... edited to add: After thinking about this, Caddyshack's little gopher popped into my head. Wonder if that's where someone in PETA got the idea?
