LifeWay Christian Store, the chain known for its Christian books, gifts and Bibles, will close some of its locations due to "an accelerated rate of erosion," the company's president has announced. In an email sent to employees, LifeWay Christian Resources President Thom Rainer said the company had “prayed that our investments in and commitments to the LifeWay stores would prove fruitful,” but “that just has not been the case,” the Baptist Press first reported on Wednesday. www.christianpost.com/news/lifeway-christian-stores-close-locations-declining-sales.html

I am really sorry to see this as Lifeway is the only Christian book store that we have left around here.

I hate to see an increased loss of brick and mortar stores. I don't think an increased digital presence is really the answer. People are becoming more and more withdrawn from each other with more and more shopping done online. This doesn't help our society in a positive way, imo. Did you read the stories that were along the right side of the Lifeway article? . . . "How Should Christians Respond to Child Drag Queens and Sexualizing Kids", and "California Pastor Ousted After 'Homosexuality is Sin' Church Sign Stirs Protest", etc., etc. Come quickly Lord Jesus! That's about all I can say today.

I have no experience with their Lifeway's Christian Stores. But one of the Bible software applications I have is published by Lifeway. That one is called, "WordSearch"*. It was the first package I bought back when it was called, "Bible Explorer". I have always found Lifeway a very easy company to work with. Some software publishers make transferring licenses to new computers almost as fun as a root canal**. It has never been so with Lifeway.
I rarely trade at Christian stores any more. They used to be bookstores with lots of Bibles, tracts and useful books for sale. But these last 30 years the trend has been to become Christian Gift Stores selling trinkets with only a few Bibles and books.
*For Bible software I mainly use BibleWorks 10 these days, but I keep WordSearch for some content. **Logos is powerful software, but the last license transfer was unsatisfactory. I don't need Logos.

Our one remaining Christian bookstore appears to sell Bibles, tracts, and research books as an afterthought. It's so sad. Further annoying, even the t-shirts they sell are "Christian light" in whatever message they may be carrying. Beyond that, they are supportive of any religion that 'might' have any relationship to Christianity (and I'm talking cults, not Judaism).
Because of that slide down the slippery slope, I have not set foot in that store for a few years now.

I will really miss our local Lifeway store.
Nearly all of the local churches get their Sunday School supplies and other church needs there.
Some of my earliest memories are going there with my Dad and Grandfather when they were both serving on the board of the church that our family went to at the time.

That's sad, really. Especially when you consider LifeWay has been in business over 125 years.
It's not just Christian bookstores, however. All booktores are hurting - many are long gone in the past decade. We do not have a bookstore in this town any more, except The Salt Cellar, the Christian bookstore, which has very few books in it.
You have to go to Oklahoma City to find a bookstore.
