A month after being slapped with a federal trademark lawsuit by the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, the Boy Scouts of America is considering bankruptcy as membership plummets and legal costs from defending itself against lawsuits alleging sexual abuse of boys mount. Sources told The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that the BSA hired law firm Sidley Austin LLP for assistance with a possible Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh noted in the statement that while there were “no imminent actions or immediate decisions expected” the organization continues to examine the best way to manage a desire to carry out their mission while compensating victims of sexual abuse at the same time.

This is soooo sad. Boy Scouts of America has been a really positive organization in this area, and this state for decades. I hate to see the BSA fall apart, but then again, how could anything come of it considering what they opened their doors to allow?
We've had a couple of fine young men earn their Eagle Scout badges in the past 3 or 4 years. The one is the son of a fellow Realtor. He did a business plan, marketing plan, held fundraisers, coordinated the permits along with the dirtwork people, etc., etc. and built a huge 10 Commandments statue at the sidewalk's edge of one of the Southern Baptist churches downtown. It's quite a work of art! I can't remember what the other scout did - and he may not be finished yet, but when I read a newspaper article on it, I thought it was pretty awesome too.
