Sung to the tune of "O Tannenbaum"
O Lutefisk, O Lutefisk, how fragrant your aroma, O Lutefisk, O Lutefisk, you put me in a coma. You smell so strong, you look like glue, You taste just like an overshoe, But lutefisk, come Saturday, I think I'll eat you anyvay
O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, I put you in the doorvay. I wanted you to ripen up just like they do in Norway. A dog came by and sprinkled you. I hit him with my overshoe. O lutefisk, now I suppose I'll eat you while I hold my nose.
O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, how well I do remember. On Christmas Eve how we'd receive our big treat of December. It wasn't turkey or fried ham. It wasn't even pickled Spam. My mother knew there was no risk In serving buttered lutefisk.
O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, now everyone discovers That lutefisk and lefse make Norwegians better lovers. Now all the world can have a ball. You're better than that Geritol. O lutefisk, with brennevin [Norwegian brandy] You make me feel like Errol Flynn.
O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, you have a special flavor. O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, all good Norwegians savor. That slimy slab we know so well Identified by ghastly smell. Lutefisk, O lutefisk, Our loyalty won't waver.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Oh, I'm glad you did! What would December be without lutefisk? ... Anyone who happens to be in the area next month might want to stop in & check this out. It's at North Dakota State U. Heh, I'd do it if I were there.

Yes, Jeanette, wouldn't that be a great chance to try lutefisk? I can't imagine finding it anywhere local, unless possibly the German market might have it, or be able to get it. It's a little store, family run for at least 4 decades, and they carry a really nice, tho' small, selection of German & other European foods and goods. I'll have to remember to stop by there in the next few days & ask about lutefisk. I know the German store carries pickled herring - my late MIL used to get a jar and opening that was part of her New Year celebration. by the way: I would not let my MIL talk me into trying that pickled herring, no way! I'm thinking of stopping by the German store to get a jar of it and finally try it - just for Mom!

My mom ~ as a kid ~ I remember there being pickled pigs feet! I don’t remember ever trying them. I think she may have also had pickled eggs.
Mom’s mom was from Poland.
Never the “Lutefisk”, though. 😂

Never the “Lutefisk”, though. 😂 You've brought back some good memories, Jeanette! My late MIL was the 1st generation born in the US. Her parents came here from Poland and settled in Milwaukee. She didn't have pickled pigs feet around the house, but she did cook some Polish dishes. Hearts and kidneys was a big deal - she and my late dh would eat on a batch of those till they were gone. She did often have a big jar of pickled eggs - I've eaten those, but not in years. She made a couple of dishes he wouldn't even enter the house when she was cooking (duck's blood soup was the biggy). He said the smell was unbearable. She didn't make that one after she moved to Oklahoma - couldn't get the duck's blood and she couldn't imagine why! She'd get me laughing so easily. Never heard her mention lutefisk, so that must have been too far removed from their culture - it's Scandinavian and Norwegian, but I'd expect anybody who'd eat pickled herring would probably also eat luefisk. I still miss my MIL and she's been gone 24 years. Hard to believe.

My mom would have pickled pig's feet too. I know I tried some, well over 50 years ago, but I forget what they were like. I see no need for a refresher!

The Lutefisk Thread - a True Tradition! . . . I this tradition! I started singing the theme song as soon as I read the thread title.
