Bezos, Gates back fake meat and dairy made from fungus as next big alt-proteinAs consumers become increasingly comfortable eating faux-meat burgers that look, cook and taste like the real thing, a food-tech start-up backed by Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates is using fungus as the primary ingredient to create alt-meat foods. I'm so allergic to molds, that stuff would probably kill me! Wonder if creating faux foods is part of the reason Gates has bought up so much farmland in the US?

Can Eating a Plant-Based Diet Lower Your Risk of Developing Severe COVID-19?Need another reason to pack your plate with produce? Recent research suggests that eating whole plant foods might reduce your risk of experiencing moderate-to-severe COVID-19. . . . new research suggests there's one surprising factor that may lower your risk of developing moderate-to-severe COVID-19: Eating a plant-based diet. The study, which was published in June in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, analyzed survey data from health care workers from six countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, U.K., and U.S.) who had "substantial" exposure to COVID-19 patients. Of the group, 568 were diagnosed with COVID-19, and 2,316 were not. Of the patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19, 138 developed "moderate-to-severe" COVID-19 (meaning, they had a fever, respiratory issues, low oxygen levels, among other things), while 439 had very mild or mild cases of the virus. After analyzing the data, the researchers discovered that those who followed a plant-based diet had a 73 percent lower risk of developing moderate-to-severe COVID-19 than their counterparts. Also worth noting: People who followed either a plant-based or pescatarian diet had 59 percent lower odds of developing a moderate-to-severe form of COVID-19. As for those who maintained a low-carb, high protein diet? They actually had greater odds of developing moderate-to-severe COVID-19. Overall, there was no link between a person's diet and whether they got infected with COVID-19 in the first place or how long their illness lasted. --- Infectious disease experts are hesitant to say for sure that switching to a plant-based diet will help protect you from severe COVID-19. www.shape.com/lifestyle/mind-and-body/plant-based-diet-covid-risk?did=672148-20210907&cmp=shapedaily_090721&utm_campaign=shape-daily_newsletter&utm_source=shape.com&utm_medium=email&utm_content=090721&cid=672148&mid=66454785231

Berkeley Becomes First US City To Commit To Vegan MealsThis week, the City Council of Berkeley passed a resolution to slash the amount of animal products the city purchases by 50 percent by 2024, with progress on the goal to be reported to the Council by the City Manager by January 31, 2022. Further, the resolution adopts a long-term goal of phasing out all purchases of animal products and replacing them with plant-based foods. The feasibility and timeline of the later goal will be reported by the City Manager to Council by June 30, 2022. The resolution will result in more plant-forward meals at city-supplied places such as summer camps, senior centers, and the Berkeley City Jail. “Berkeley has been a leader in addressing climate change, passing and implementing numerous measures that reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve the environmental quality of our community, region, and world. One critically important sector that accounts for about 25% of global GHG emissions and significant emissions here in Berkeley is our food,” the resolution states. “It is clear that the world cannot meet global GHG reduction targets without significantly curbing consumption of animal products. High-meat-eating nations like the United States, which consumes 2.6 times more meat than the global per capita average, must help shoulder this responsibility.” allfoodsmagazine.com/berkeley-becomes-first-us-city-to-commit-to-vegan-meals/Do you suppose more cities across the country will follow suit?

Faux Meat Falters at the Drive-ThruFor some of the fast-food restaurants that peddled plant-based versions of their menus to appeal to meat-conscious consumers, the novelty is already wearing off. It could spell trouble for the makers of the products, who’ve hyped the partnerships as a major step to mainstream popularity. The biggest restaurant chains are backing off—or at least slowing down—faux-meat plans after the Covid‑19 pandemic and lockdowns upended dining and eating. Instead of trying new things, Americans have been eating at home or seeking familiar, comforting foods when they do venture out. Orders of plant-based burgers and sandwiches at fast-food restaurants were unchanged for the year ended in June, while beef burger orders climbed 12% over the same period, according to market researcher NPD Group Inc. “I don’t think that plant-based meat is at the top of the list for many restaurant operators right now,” says BTIG LLC analyst Peter Saleh. “It’s more about, let’s just sell the core menu items, and let’s do it the best we can.” Inspire Brands Inc.’s Dunkin’ has taken Beyond Meat Inc.’s breakfast sausage out of thousands of locations. Yum! Brands Inc.’s KFC, which ran trials of Beyond Meat’s chicken nuggets, has yet to turn them into a regular menu item, and Burger King has notched down the marketing of its Impossible Whopper. At Little Caesars a trial of Impossible Foods Inc. sausage didn’t work out; it just wasn’t a popular enough topping to support an alternative. The pizza chain is giving faux pepperoni a shot, though only in large metro areas, including Miami, New York, and San Francisco. www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-24/which-fast-food-has-fake-meat-not-many-serve-beyond-meat-impossible-foods

People want their burgers & fries! Can't say I blame them, or that I'm said to see the faux food take a hit. Everything is not a good thing to put in a human body.

World’s largest kosher certifier won’t endorse Impossible PorkThe Orthodox Union (OU) found itself caught in a conundrum recently when approached by Impossible Foods with a request to certify their new offering as kosher. And what are some of those "sensitivies" - ? To start with, the word "Pork" in the product name and on the package. Beyond that, there are two concepts in Jewish law that could cause problems if Impossible Pork were certified kosher. The first, marit ayin, or appearance to the eye, is a concept in Jewish law that prohibits actions that appear to violate Jewish law, even if they technically do not. The second, lifnei iver, or not placing stumbling blocks before the blind, raises a related concern: whether someone who sees an observant Jew eating Impossible Pork dumplings could conclude that pork must actually be kosher. And lastly, for many dietary observant Jews, the "ick factor" of consuming something that replicates one of Judaism’s strongest taboos — would keep them away from trying Impossible Pork. www.timesofisrael.com/worlds-largest-kosher-certifier-wont-endorse-impossible-pork/?utm_source=The+Daily+Edition&utm_campaign=daily-edition-2021-10-03&utm_medium=email

Burger King announces new ‘impossible’ nuggetsBurger King Impossible Nuggets are officially here, but not everyone can agree on them. The meatless nuggets will debut in select test markets on Oct. 11, according to The Takeout. Created by Impossible Foods, the new item will make Burger King the first global fast-food chain to offer meat-free nuggets. While the nuggets remain in the test phase, they’ll only be available in specific markets. As of Oct. 11, customers in Boston, Miami and Des Moines, Iowa, will get the chance to try them. www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/burger-king-impossible-nuggets-fast-122342670.html

Impossible Nuggets are being displayed in an endcap freezer case at our westside Wal-Mart. I saw them yesterday afternoon. Didn't notice the price - I was in a hurry. I have no idea if they're selling or not. That's the first store I've seen them in.

McDonald’s is testing its new McPlant burger in these 8 citiesMcDonald’s will test the plant-based McPlant burger created as part of its partnership with Beyond Meat in eight U.S. restaurants next month. The trial is the latest step in McDonald’s cautious march to add plant-based meat to its menu. The company has taken its time to learn more about the longevity of meat substitutes and consumer demand, even as other fast-food chains raced to add the trendy item to their menus. For example, rival Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International, added the Impossible Whopper to its menu more than two years ago. Starting Nov. 3, McDonald’s customers in Irving, Texas; Carrollton, Texas; Cedar Falls, Iowa; Jennings, Louisiana; Lake Charles, Louisiana; El Segundo, California; and Manhattan Beach, California, can order the McPlant for a limited time. The meat-free patty’s ingredients include peas, rice and potatoes, and the McPlant burger will include mayonnaise and a slice of American cheese and will be cooked on the same grills as its beef patties, according to McDonald’s. www.yahoo.com/news/mcdonald-bringing-mcplant-burger-8-181033274.html

Peas, rice, and potatoes, eh? That doesn't strike me as appealing. Sounds like it would have the consistency of wallpaper paste.
People need to pay attention - read up on the ingredients, check out the nutrition information before ordering. That's one good thing - basically every fast food restaurant has the nutrition info for the foods posted online & many have that info posted on a wall in their restaurants too.

Plant-Based Food Companies Face New Critics: Environmental AdvocatesConsumers and investors alike have gobbled up Beyond Meat’s burgers, sausage and chicken in recent years, thanks at least in part to the company’s message that its plant-based products are good for the environment. But some are not so sure. One investor-tracking firm gives Beyond Meat a zero when it comes to sustainability measures. Another rates it a “severe risk,” putting it on a par with beef and chicken processing giants JBS and Tyson. “We don’t feel we have sufficient information to say Beyond Meat is fundamentally different from JBS,” said Roxana Dobre, a manager of consumer goods research at Sustainalytics, a firm that rates the sustainability of companies based on their environmental, social and corporate governance impact. The problem, critics say, is that neither Beyond Meat nor Impossible Foods discloses the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from its operations, supply chains or consumer waste. They also do not disclose the effects of their operations on forests or how much water they use. By some estimates, the agriculture industry produces one-third of the world’s greenhouse gases linked to human activity, is a primary driver of deforestation and uses as much as 70% of the world’s fresh water supply. www.yahoo.com/news/plant-based-food-companies-face-142424581.html

Sounds like the plant-based food industry is on par for comparison to the move being pushed on us to go to all-electric vehicles.

It seems that all animal protein sources are under attack by the liberal loonies not just meat. 'Egg Armageddon': Mass. voters passed animal welfare law that effectively bans eggs from being sold in the stateEggs will largely disappear from Massachusetts grocery store shelves come Jan. 1, 2022, unless state lawmakers act quickly to amend a strict new animal welfare law. In 2016, Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly passed an animal treatment measure that, in part, made it illegal to sell eggs born of hens with less than 1.5 square feet of floor space in their enclosure. Now that decision, scheduled to take effect in 2022, is coming home to roost — and it's threatening to wipe out the supply of eggs in the state. According to the Boston Globe, egg industry representatives such as the New England Brown Egg Council are predicting that the new rules will decrease the state's current egg supply by approximately 90%. The new standards, which apply to all egg products, cover eggs imported from other states, as well. "[It's] not just eggs. It's egg products, as well," Bob Beauregard, general manager of The Country Hen in Hubbardston, told WCVB. "So hard-cooked eggs, liquid eggs would all have to be removed from the shelf come Jan. 1 if the law does not change." www.theblaze.com/news/massachusetts-egg-crisis-animal-welfare-law?utm_source=theblaze-dailyPM&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Daily-Newsletter__PM%202021-12-16&utm_term=ACTIVE%20LIST%20-%20TheBlaze%20Daily%20PM

This is truly insane. What about bakery products made with eggs? And any other food items made with eggs? Will this shutdown the local restaurant and fastfood breakfast industry as well? The people really didn't think this one through, did they?!
