It's the same as picking and choosing Bible verses and coming up with garbage theology. In context they mean something completely different. In 1931, when the song was written, the lyrics were (and remain) racist but the intent, as part of the show, was anti-racist. It's much the same as the TV show "All in the Family." The content was frequently very racist. Everybody recognized that fact but few (there were some that I knew personally) wanted the program removed for racist content.
