This man was a southern writer who changed the style of southern writing after WWII. He studied and received his degree as a medical doctor, intending to become a psychiatrist. Through a series of events, that included contracting tuberculosis, that did not work out. It was then that he began writing. He was known for his philosophical novels set in and around New Orleans.

Yes. I thought his life story - what of it is in Wikopedia - was really interesting. I encountered some quote of his - can't remember it right now - last summmer & kept the photo from the online magazine article I'd read.

Did he study medicine at some point in his life? I have a suspect I'm searching pictures for, but if it's who I think it is, he studied medicine too.

Yes, he was a medical Dr, but not a particularly successful one by some accounts.

I was pretty sure I recognized the face. I think this is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
The face above matches the face in the picture you posted pretty well.
He was an interesting (probably weird) guy. He was in the running to be named as the person who was actually Jack the Ripper, but things didn't go that far.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is correct. He is best known for his mystery stories, especially the ones featuring Sherlock Holmes, but some of his sci-fi and suspense/horror stories were pretty good too.

That old phrase, "Always the Bridesmaid, Never the Bride", could be applied to this next man. He held a couple of important government positions - one elected, one appointed. Some people considered him non-partisan, but he had a little problem with favoring Southern Democrats for jobs. ...
