MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A man drove his car into an occupied Catholic church Saturday morning, set it on fire, then led deputies on a car chase. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office was called out to the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ocala Saturday morning. Deputies said a man drove his car into the front doors and lit a fire while parishioners were inside. The suspect then reportedly led deputies on a car chase before being captured soon after. The sheriff’s office said no serious injuries were reported. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco announced via Facebook that extra patrols will be at the county’s places of worship Sunday morning out of an abundance of caution.

OCALA, Fla. (AP) — A man accused of setting a Florida church on fire was being held without bail Sunday on charges that include attempted second-degree murder and arson. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office charged Steven Shields, 23, on Saturday, hours after detectives say he plowed a minivan through the front door of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ocala, doused the foyer with gasoline and set it on fire, causing extensive damage. Shields told detectives what he did was “awesome,” and he smiled and laughed, the affidavit said. He told detectives he was “on a mission,” called himself “king” and that he has problems with the Catholic Church and referenced passages in the Bible’s Book of Revelations. www.wfla.com/news/florida/florida-man-accused-of-setting-catholic-church-on-fire/

So this guy understands that's he's mentally ill - and admits he's stopped taking his meds. That sounds like he's conscious enough to have learned better somewhere along the way. Wonder what he was quoting from the Book of Revelation? It might make no sense, or explain a lot about the guy.
Happy to hear no one was injured at the church.

The article doesn't say, but if I had to guess, he is most likely associating the "Great Harlot" of Revelation chapter 17 with the Roman Catholic church like many but not all prophecy teachers do.

Hadn't thought about that, though I've certainly heard that before. Have you ever read Dave Hunt's book, Woman Rides the Beast? I haven't, but I've read his book, Occult Invasion, which has a chapter on the Catholic Church that struck me as fairly interesting at the time. It's been a few years since I read Occult Invasion, but it was very good.

Have you ever read Dave Hunt's book, Woman Rides the Beast? Yes I have read it, but it has been more than 20 years ago - around the same time that I discovered and read the first first couple of novels in the left behind series.
Personally, while I do think that there are many very real problems with some elements Catholic theology and practices, I don't think that the Great Harlot religion of the 1st half of the Tribulation period is the Catholic church specifically; rather I think that it will most likely be a new version of the old mystery cult that was the basis of religion in ancient Babylon (from which nearly all current false religions are descended in one way or another) that will also incorporate elements of most if not all modern false religions including all of the false versions of Christianity that will be left behind at the Rapture.
For all of the Catholic church's problems, I do believe that there are many true believers within it who really love the Lord.

You may be right! I know I don't have an answer, but what you stated certainly makes sense. For all of the Catholic church's problems, I do believe that there are many true believers within it who really love the Lord. I believe that too. My late-MIL was a devout Catholic, but she was even more devoutly a follower of Jesus Christ.
