(Reuters) - Denmark woke up on Friday to the words "racist fish" scrawled across the base of the "Little Mermaid", the bronze statue honouring Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairy tale that perches on a rock in the sea off a pier in Copenhagen. Police said it had not yet identified the perpetrators. The 107-year-old sculpture, which is visited by one million tourists each year, has been vandalised before, including by anti-whaling campaigners and pro-democracy activists, twice suffering decapitation.
Protesters of the Black Lives Matter movement around the world have in recent months rallied against statues of historical figures who played a role in racist oppression, such as slave traders and colonialists.
The Little Mermaid has not been part of this debate but last year a Disney live action remake of the 1989 animated film of the same name was the subject of a controversy after African American actress Halle Bailey was cast in the central role.

Okay, this is my 3rd attempt at posting in this thread. I'm wondering if I'm supposed to say anything, or simply - ? I don't know why anyone would be upset with Halle Berry voicing the Little Mermaid. But, heh, many things make no sense to me here at the start of the 2nd decade of the 21st century. One thing I've decided is that I am on the hunt for a book - like maybe a coffee table-sized book - with glossy pages and color photos of the historical statues located around the United State. There should be some top level description of the piece, like who the artist was, when the piece was commissioned or installed, what the motivation was for it (like the story behind the statue of Lincoln freeing the slave that was the brainchild of a freed slave, and was funded largely by freed slaves who worked & donated the money for it). If any of you see a book such as I'm looking for, please let me know. I'm going over to my phone and download 2 of my favorite Oklahoma sculptures so I can post them here.
