(Fort Worth Star-Telegram) A Texas Realtor group will no longer use the term “master” in description of their homes, according to Realtors and media reports. What were once called master bedrooms and master bathrooms are now referred to as primary bedrooms and primary bathrooms by the Houston Association of Realtors. The group made the change following a review of terminology, according to KPRC. It has been a topic of discussion for several years, the agency said. “The overarching message was that some members were concerned about how the terms might be perceived by some other agents and consumers” according to a statement HAR sent members. “The consensus was that ‘primary’ describes the rooms equally as well as ‘master’ while avoiding any possible misperceptions.”

OK, now this witch hunt for racist things is just getting too silly to be taken seriously at all. You've hit that nail squarely on the head! I watched part of Greg Gutfeld's show last evening. He couldn't keep from laughing while he was trying to put out some of the suggestions he's seen and heard for items that need to be "de-racismized." He was funnier than any of the things he was talking about.  I don't like the term 'primary' bathroom for the master bath because I don't believe most people would consider it the 'primary'. We say 'main bathroom' for the one in the hallway because it's the one for everyone to use. The master bath, which is at the end of the master bedroom, involves invading the grownups'/owners' personal space. At least the Houston Assoc didn't ban the word 'master'; they are still allowing their Realtors to use that word in their marketing. |

I wonder how long it will be before one of these groups of kooks realizes that a critical part of the engines in cars and many other machines is called the "master" cylinder which operates by regulating the hydraulic pressure in other components that are actually called "slave cylinders" and "slave pistons".

In elementary school, I can remember in 1st grade, and in 3rd through 5th grades, that we not only looked up our spelling words and had various writing assignments with them so that we learned to used those words correctly, but we also had dictionary assignments that were above and beyond our spelling words. Because of that, I learned a lot more words than had been assigned in spelling, and I was really interested in the history of common words. I know - I was a geek kid, but I really enjoyed knowing that a word came from a Latin root, or Middle English or whatever. The exposure did all of us kids good - even if the average student didn't study as intently as I might have. |
